The Wright State volleyball team continues its strong hitting of late Wednesday night as the Raiders hit .301 in sweeping the Loyola Ramblers in Horizon League action at Alumni Gym in Chicago, winning 30-22, 30-27, 30-22.
Loyola led 14-9 in game one, but after a timeout, WSU tied the game with five straight points, including three kills from Samantha Connor. The two teams went back and forth from there until Wright State won the game with a 9-1 run, which featured three more Connor kills.
The Ramblers again held the early advantage in game two at 13-10, but the Raiders followed with a 6-0 burst to take the lead. Loyola went back ahead 26-25 after a WSU attack error, only to see Wright State again end the game with a run, this time 5-1, including three straight kills from Alisha Kimbro to break a 27-27 tie.
Again Loyola led 13-10 in the third game, only to see the Raiders go in front for good with a 9-2 run. The Ramblers would get no closer than three the rest of the way as WSU wrapped up the match by scoring five of the final six points, two of those coming on kills from Shaunda Sandifer.
The win marks the first time ever that the Raiders won both ends of the Chicago road trip since joining the League in 1994.
Along with its .301 hitting percentage compared to .205 for Loyola, WSU also had a 60-46 kill advantage. The Raiders have now hit .297 over their last three wins after hitting just .162 over the first 15 matches overall.
Kimbro led the way for Wright State as she recorded a double-double of 20 kills and 12 digs in hitting .326. The Illinois native had two strong matches in her return home this week as she tallied 16 kills and 12 digs Tuesday at UIC.
Fellow senior Connor added 14 kills in hitting .345 while Becca Awaa had eight kills in hitting .333. Setter Lindsey Frank posted 42 assists and 12 digs and libero Lexi Leonhard chipped in 15 digs.
Dana VanDiggelen paced Loyola (4-13, 1-5 Horizon) with a double-double of 16 kills and 10 digs while Katie Johnson added 10 kills.
Wright State, now 7-12 overall and 4-3 in the Horizon League, wraps up the first round of League play Saturday afternoon as the Raiders host Butler for a 4:00 match.
