Three Raiders posted double figures in kills as the Wright State volleyball team defeated the UIC Flames in Horizon League quarterfinal action Friday afternoon at the Klotsche Center in Milwaukee, WSU winning the match 30-21, 31-29, 30-27.
Four straight points, two coming on kills by Alisha Kimbro and Lizzy Gunn, gave Wright State, the #3 seed in the tournament, the lead for good in game one at 6-2. UIC, the #6 seed, came as close as 8-6 before WSU put the game out of reach with a 9-2 run, one that saw four different Raiders record either a kill or a block.
Game two, however, was much tighter with five lead changes and 15 ties. Wright State trailed 23-21 following a ball handling error, but rallied to take the lead back with three unanswered points, including kills from Samantha Connor and Kimbro. UIC's Christin Hunt tied the game at 24 with a kill, only to see the Raiders respond with five straight, a burst that featured three Kimbro kills, to go up 29-24.
The Flames, though, would not go away quietly as they came back with five straight of their own to again tie the game at 29. A UIC attack error, however, gave WSU a 30-29 advantage and the Raiders closed out the game on a block from Gunn and Becca Awaa.
Wright State never trailed in the third game and led 18-12 after a Connor kill, but again UIC hung close and eventually tied the score at 25 with another 5-0 run. Two Flame hitting errors made it 27-25, only to have UIC tie it again at 27 on a Katerina Hanackova kill and a Raider error.
Lindsey Frank, though, gave WSU the lead for good with a kill and, after another UIC error, Lexi Leonhard served up an ace on match point.
UIC finished with a slight hitting advantage (.158-.154) and had the edge on blocks at 9-6, but Wright State countered with a 47-41 margin in kills and 9-2 in aces.
Kimbro led the Raiders with a near double-double of 17 kills and nine digs and added four aces while Connor had 13 kills and eight digs and Gunn chipped in 10 kills and five blocks, three of those solo. Frank dished out 40 assists with 11 digs and Leonhard had 12 digs.
Hanackova paced UIC (15-16) with 11 kills while Lana Lobdell had seven kills and nine blocks. Liz Hrebic had 15 kills and Casie Sullivan handed out 33 assists with nine digs.
Wright State, now 14-17, will face #2 seed Cleveland State in the semifinals Saturday at 2:30 Eastern with the championship match set for Sunday at 1:00 Dayton time.
