Behind a 31-point performance from Shey Peddy and three other Raiders scoring in double figures, the Wright State women's basketball team picked up its first win of the season Sunday afternoon by defeating the North Dakota State Bison 87-80 at the Cal Poly Holiday Beach Classic in San Luis Obispo, California.
Wright State trailed the entire first half as the Bison twice had 10-point leads, including 25-15 after a Brenda Slyt layup with 11:36 remaining. The Raiders, though, rallied to tie the game at 28 on a Peddy layup and after falling behind 43-35 with two minutes left in the period, closed the half with an 11-4 burst, six of those coming from Peddy, to just 47-46 at the break.
Another Peddy basket gave WSU its first lead of the day at 48-47 a minute into the second half, but again North Dakota State looked to be in position to put the game out of reach as a Jerri Penley layup made it 70-62 with 8:23 to go.
Seven more Peddy points, however, keyed a 9-2 run to cut the margin to one and a three from the freshman guard tied the game at 74 at the 4:08 mark.
Kanisha Ward put the Raiders ahead to stay with a driving layup along the left baseline with three minutes left and after two Whitney Lewis foul shots, another Peddy layup extended the lead to 80-74.
NDSU came as close as four with a minute to play, but two Ward foul shots at the 51.0-second mark started the Raiders on a 5-0 run to put the game out of reach.
The Bison outshot the Raiders 49-44 percent and had a 38-36 rebounding edge, but Wright State countered by hitting nine of 19 from three-point range compared to three of 12 for NDSU and made 22 of 31 from the foul line to 15 of 18 for North Dakota State.
Peddy led all scorers with 31 points for the Raiders, marking the first time a Wright State player has scored 30 or more in a game since Tiffany Webb also had 31 at Milwaukee on February 27, 2003. She also added four rebounds, four assists and three steals.
Lewis, who joined Peddy on the All-Tournament Team, added 18 points and seven rebounds while Sierra Crayton posted a double-double of 13 points and 11 rebounds. Ward chipped in 11, all but one coming in the second half.
North Dakota State (1-4) had four players in double figures, led by Emily Moran with 22, Lisa Bue with a double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds, Slyt with 16 and Penley with 10.
Wright State, now 1-5 on the season, returns home to face Canisius on Saturday, December 1, at the Nutter Center. Game time is 1:00.
