Softball Drops 5-4 Decision to Harvard in Nissan Invitational Championship Game

The Wright State softball team had the early lead, but Harvard scored three times in the first and held off a Raider rally in the late innings for a 5-4 decision in the championship game of the Mercer Nissan Invitational Sunday afternoon in Macon, Georgia.

The Raiders went in front with a run in the top of the first. With one out, Briauna Birl doubled down the left field line and advanced to third as the relay throw skipped away. Kristen Bradshaw followed with a chopper up the middle for a hit to drive in Birl.

Harvard answered with three in its half of the inning, but WSU drew to within one in the second as Kristen Farley led off with a double to the gap in left center and scored on a two-out hit to left off the bat of Patti Scherer.

The Crimson extended the margin to 5-2 with a pair in the bottom of the fifth, only to see the Raiders responded with two of their own in the top of the sixth. Jamie Perkins reached on an error to start the frame and singles by Erica Schroeder and Mary Jane D'Arcy loaded the bases with one out. Pinch-hitter Dana Boehmer knocked in both with a hit to center, but WSU could get no closer as Jherica Williams and Bradshaw both flied out.

The Raiders had the potential tying run on base in the seventh as Allison Cox led off with a walk, but that runner was erased on a pickoff play and the next two batters were retired in order to end the game.

Birl had two hit to pace the Raider offense.

Wright State, now 9-14 on the season, returns home for five games this week, starting with a twinbill against IPFW on Wednesday, March 28, starting at 2:00.
