It was their first games in over a week, but the Wright State softball team showed no ill effects of the long layoff Saturday afternoon as the Raiders swept a Horizon League doubleheader at Cleveland State, winning 8-5 in the opener and 4-3 in the second game.
The Vikings opened the first game scoring with a first-inning run, but WSU answered with two in the second. Jamie Perkins tied the game with a solo home run to left center and Allison Cox scored the second run on an error.
Cleveland State went up 4-2 with a run in the third and two in the fifth, but Perkins put the Raiders back in front in the sixth as after Kristen Bradshaw and Kristen Farley singled, Perkins smacked her second home run of the game and second of the season, a three-run shot to left center.
CSU again tied the game with a run in its half of the sixth, only to see Wright State go in front to stay with three more in the seventh as the Raiders took advantage of four Viking errors.
Along with having three hits, scoring twice and driving in five, Perkins also picked up the win in game one, allowing just three earned runs while striking out three. Jherica Williams also had three hits as did Cox.
WSU jumped out to a 2-0 lead in game two on a Farley RBI single and a Perkins fielder's choice play in the third, but the lead was shortlived as Cleveland State (19-8, 2-4 Horizon) evened the score with two in the bottom of the frame. Jacqueline Macy later put the Raiders up 3-2 with a solo home run along the left field line in the sixth, but, again, the Vikings quickly answered in their half of the inning.
The seventh, though, would again prove to be the difference as Wright State went in front to stay with a run. Bradshaw walked to start the inning, stole second, went to third on a groundout and scored as she beat out a fielder's choice play off the bat of Cox.
Cox (9-8) earned the win as she struck out three while Williams and Farley each had two hits.
Wright State, now 16-19 overall and 3-4 in the Horizon League, closes out the three-game set with a single game Sunday starting at 1:00.
