Softball Falls to UIC in Regular Season Finale
5/6/2007 12:00:00 PM | Softball
Wright State was tied with UIC 1-1 after four innings, but the Flames used eight hits along with two Raider errors in scoring four times in both the fifth and sixth to go on to a 9-4 Horizon League decision in the regular season finale for both teams Sunday afternoon at the WSU Softball Field.
UIC opened the scoring with a run in the second, but WSU answered with one of its own in the bottom of the frame. Senior Kristen Farley, playing in her final home game, led off with a double to left center and was sacrificed to third by fellow senior Dana Boehmer.
A fielder's choice play off the bat of Malerie Klingler erased Farley from the bases, but senior Patti Scherer kept the inning alive with an infield hit to short and Briauna Birl followed with a single through the left side of the infield to drive in Klingler and tie the game.
It stayed that way until the Flames went in front to stay in the fifth with four runs on five hits and a Raider error, the key blow being a two-run homer to left off the bat of Melissa Marinacci.
The Raiders, though, trimmed the deficit to 5-3 with two in the bottom of the fifth. Singles by Michelle Logan and Kristen Bradshaw put runners on the corners and Logan scored as Jherica Williams reached on an error. Farley later knocked in Bradshaw with a hit along the left field line.
But just when it looked like Wright State was getting back into the contest, the Flames (18-31, 8-7 Horizon) put the game out of reach with four more in the sixth on three hits and another WSU error.
Wright State scored a run in the bottom of the sixth, but could get no closer as the Raiders were retired in order in the seventh.
Logan collected two hits and scored twice for the Raiders while Williams and Farley also had two hits.
Wright State, now 21-33 overall and 8-10 in the Horizon League, will be the #7 seed for this week's Horizon League Tournament in Cleveland and will face #2 seed and host Cleveland State in the opening round on Thursday, May 10, at 9 a.m. The double-elimination tournament continues through Saturday with an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament on the line.
