The Wright State volleyball team came out swinging Friday night at the C.J. McLin Gymnasium as the Raiders hit .310 on the night, including .371 over the first two games, in sweeping The Citadel as part of the Raider Challenge, winning 30-19, 30-24, 30-24.
WSU jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the opening game thanks to three Tara Geegan kills and two from Samantha Connor and the margin eventually grew to 14-5 following a block from Lizzy Gunn and Becca Awaa and a Connor service ace. The Raiders maintained at least an eight-point cushion the rest of the way.
Game two was much closer as the two teams were tied eight times before the Bulldogs went up 16-15 on an Amanda Beal kill. After a timeout, however, momentum shifted in favor of the Raiders as they scored four straight points, the final two on a kill and block from Awaa.
The Citadel drew to within two at 23-21 on a block from Jessica Maas and Caitlin Vyborny, but a Shaunda Sandifer kill and a later block from the freshman middle blocker along with Awaa helped put Wright State up 26-21. The Raiders then sealed the game two win by scoring the final four points, three on kills by Connor, Awaa and Sandifer.
The third game was also close in the early going as a Beal kill gave The Citadel a 10-9 lead. WSU, though, answered with five straight and after the Bulldogs closed the gap to one, added four more to make it 19-14.
A Vyborny kill cut the Bulldog deficit to 20-18, but Wright State put the game out of reach with a 7-1 burst, including two more Awaa kills.
The Raiders outhit the Bulldogs .310-.111 as they had a 52-34 advantage in kills and outblocked The Citadel 8-3.
Jessica Woods led the way for Wright State with a double-double effort of 12 kills and 14 digs while Connor added 13 kills. Two other Raiders posted impressive hitting nights as Geegan hit .778 with seven kills in nine attempts and Awaa hit .538 with seven kills in 13 attempts and added four blocks. Sandifer hit .364 with six kills off the bench.
Rachel Sanders paced The Citadel (1-4) with near double-double of 15 kills and nine digs.
Wright State, now 2-7 on the season, concludes play at the Raider Challenge Saturday with a pair of matches, taking on Liberty at Noon followed by South Florida at 7:00.
