The Wright State men's soccer team dropped a 3-1 match to Butler on Saturday evening at Alumni Field. A pair of late first half goals gave BU the advantage and a late goal by the Raiders was not enough to top the league leading Bulldogs on Senior Night.
The scoring got started in the 40th minute when Butler struck with a pair of goals in a nine second period. The first tally came when Eduardo Garcia took a shot after a deflected ball on a corner kick. Then on the restart, Ben Sippola struck a ball from 40 yards out and hit it into the top right corner of the net to push BU to a 2-0 advantage.
Garcia struck again in the second half when he took a long pass from Kyle Pateros and pushed his second goal to the far post.
With Butler leading 3-0, the Raiders got on the board after a Butler foul at the top of the 18-yard box. Josh Grossman took the kick and his shot was deflected to the foot of senior Anthony Smerk. Smerk stuck a ball to the near post for his first career tally and cut the BU lead to 3-1 at the 82:09 mark in the match.
Wright State held a 14-10 advantage in shots and took five corner kicks to the Bulldogs four. Sophomore goalkeeper Matt Koewler made two saves in net for WSU.
The Raiders are now 3-10-1 overall and sit at 2-2-1 in Horizon League play. The Green and Gold will close out the season with five consecutive road matches, starting at 3:00 on Wednesday, October 22 at Bowling Green.
