It was a crisp fall evening at Alumni Field and the Wright State men's soccer team heated up at the right time to take a 3-1 victory over Milwaukee in the opening round of the 2008 Horizon League Championships. After falling behind 1-0 at halftime, the Raiders rallied to score three unanswered goals to advance to the second round.
Milwaukee (4-10-5) got things started offensively when Travis Phillips sent a pass from the midfield over the Raiders defense and Eric Frazier converted for his sixth goal of the season in the 34th minute. It was only the fourth shot of the half for UWM, but provided the Panthers a 1-0 lead heading into halftime.
With the clock creeping towards the final twenty minutes of the match, WSU got a spark when the Milwaukee defense miscleared a ball senior Milovan Milosevic struck from the top of the 18-yard box. Milosevic sent a line drive shot to the left post to knot the game at a goal apiece at the 68:03 mark.
Braden Fleak would provide the rest of the WSU offense, but a pair of great assists led to the scoring chances for the junior. In the 73rd minute, Carl Ebers dribbled down the left flank and squeezed a pass into the middle of the box through a pair of defenders. Fleak slid in and drove home the eventual match winner into the open net.
Then, just 70-seconds later, the junior took a pass from Jordan Haggit and converted it for his tenth goal of the season. Fleak controlled the crossing pass and hit a solid ball into the net to give WSU a 3-1 lead at the 73:15 mark. The three goals are the most this season for the Raiders, who improve to 6-13-1 overall.
Sophomore keeper Matt Koewler allowed the one first half goal, but made one save in the second half to pick up the victory in net for WSU. The Raiders outshot the Panthers 13-9 in the match and held a 6-2 edge in shots on-goal. Fleak took four shots – all on goal – to extend his league lead in the shots category to 77 and move into sixth place on the single season shots list.
The Raiders will travel north to face off with Cleveland State in the second round of the championships on Sunday, November 9 starting at 1:00 in Cleveland.
