The Wright State softball team split a pair of games in the final day of the Comfort Inn and Suites Invitational Sunday at the Dragon's Dome in Pekin, Illinois. The Raiders run-ruled IUPUI 11-1 before falling to eventual tournament champ Iowa State 6-2.
After being shutout in both games on just three hits Saturday, the WSU offense came alive quickly against IUPUI with six runs in the first. The first run scored as Louie Haney singled up the middle and Justine Shilt followed with a triple to right center. After Kristen Bradshaw reached on a third strike passed ball and stole second, Allison Cox drove in Shilt with a single and both Bradshaw and Cox came in on a Katie Kine double to left. Mollie Berry doubled in Kine and later came in on Briauna Birl's single.
Wright State tacked on two more in the second on a Bradshaw RBI single and a Cox sacrifice fly and another in the third on another run-scoring hit from Birl.
IUPUI scored an unearned run in its half of the third, only to see the Raiders round out the scoring with two runs in the fourth. Ashleigh Jackson accounted for the first run with a solo home run to left center with the other coming as China Frost, who pinch-ran for Cox after a double, scored on a Berry bunt single and error.
Sharon Palma (1-1) picked up the win as she allowed four hits and the unearned run in five innings with three strikeouts. Offensively, WSU had three hits each from Shilt, Berry and Birl while Haney and Cox each had two hits.
In the second game of the day, Iowa State led 2-0 after scoring single runs in the first and third, but Wright State tied it with a pair in its half of the third. With one out, hits by Birl and Haney set the stage for Shilt, who smacked a double down the left field line to drive in Birl, and Bradshaw, who had a sacrifice fly to plate Haney.
The Cyclones, though, regained the lead with two runs in the fifth and rounded out the scoring with two more in the seventh.
Cox and Birl led the WSU offense in the second game with two hits each.
Wright State (1-3) returns to action February 13-14 at the Phyllis Rafter Memorial in Kennesaw, Georgia as the Raiders face Tennessee Tech, host Kennesaw State and Southern Illinois-Edwardsville.
