Wright State was four outs away from a Horizon League doubleheader sweep of Youngstown State Saturday at the WSU Softball Field, having won the opener 7-0 and leading 2-0 in the nightcap, only to see the Penguins score three in the sixth and three more in the seventh in gaining a split with a 6-2 decision.
The Raiders used the long ball in going up 3-0 in the opening inning of the first game as Jamie Perkins hit a solo home run to left center and, after Kristen Bradshaw walked, Justine Shilt followed with a two-run home run of her own to center.
An Ashleigh Jackson two-run single highlighted a four-run sixth for WSU and the sophomore pitched the shutout win (8-4) as she allowed just two hits and a walk while striking out eight.
A Bradshaw sacrifice fly along with a run-scoring single by Shilt put Wright State up 2-0 in the second game and it remained that way as Youngstown State had runners at first and third with two outs in the sixth. Kristen Philen, though, kept the inning alive with a RBI single and walks to Allyse Ledford, Amanda Palmore and Haley Thomas forced in the tying and go-ahead runs.
YSU then added three insurance runs in the seventh on a lead-off home run to left center by Kim Klonowski and a two-run double from Kristina Rendle.
Wright State (14-14, 2-3 Horizon) wraps up the series against the Penguins with a single game Sunday at noon.
