DAYTON, Ohio – The Wright State athletic department and Director of Athletics Bob Grant has announced that head women's soccer coach Pat Ferguson will receive a contract extension through the 2013-14 season. The four year extension for Ferguson is a product of the programs growth on the field of play and in the classroom.
“Pat is an extremely dedicated person and that dedication has shown in his teams efforts here at Wright State,” said senior associate athletic director Maureen Cooper. “His passion for the student-athletes to succeed and his enthusiasm to represent the university in a positive light are true assets to this university. He has shown the ability to guide the program in a positive direction and puts emphasis on his players to perform at the highest level, both in athletics and in life.”
Ferguson came to Wright State after spending five seasons at Campbell University (N.C.) and has led the Raiders to four-straight 10+ win seasons. The four, ten win seasons for Ferguson mark the first time in program history that the feat has been accomplished. The Green and Gold also set a new school record for wins, with 13 during the 2007 season, and league victories, with five during the '07 slate.
“As a coach, it is great when your athletic department has confidence in what you are doing,” Ferguson said. “My family is grateful for the opportunity to remain a part of this great university and our coaching staff will continue our quest to become one of the top programs in the league.”
During his time at the helm of the Raiders, Ferguson has seen his team perform well against Horizon League and national competition. In 2006, the Raiders played to a 1-1 draw against #16 Nebraska in Lincoln. The Green and Gold followed that up by taking #6 Texas to the brink, before falling 2-1 in 2007, and last season WSU dropped a 2-1 decision in double-overtime at Alabama. On the playing field, Ferguson owns an overall mark of 46-23-9 and is 17-8-5 in Horizon League matches.
The Green and Gold have had 12 players selected to the All-Horizon League squad, five player named to the Horizon League All-Newcomer Team and five players have garnered NCSAA All-Region accolades. Jess Rooma became the firsts WSU player to earn First Team All-Horizon League honors during her four years on campus, while also adding four NSCAA All-Region selections to her playing resumè. Rooma and Amber Kasmer have each been tabbed the Horizon League Newcomer of the Year and the Green and Gold have made two appearances in the Horizon League Semifinals under Ferguson.
During his four seasons on campus, Ferguson has had nine players named to the Academic Honor Roll for the Horizon League, three players garner Academic All-League nods and one student-athlete selected to the CoSIDA Academic All-District squad. The 2005 and 2006 teams were honored with the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Team Academic Award.
