The Wright State women's soccer team was doomed by an own goal in a 2-0 season-opening loss at Indiana's Armstrong Stadium on Friday. The Green and Gold fell behind in the 33rd minute of the match on an own goal, before IU added the second marker of the contest early in the second stanza to claim the win.
The Raiders attempted two shots in the first half, but an own goal at the 32:48 mark pushed the host Hoosiers ahead, 1-0, heading into the half. Indiana took seven shots in the opening frame and junior goalkeeper Meghan Hackerson made one save in the first 45 minutes.
The second half didn't start well for the Green and Gold either, as Leigh Ann Cummings connected on her first goal of the season in the 53rd minute. The ball was played into the box, deflected off an IU player and found the foot of Cummings, who converted the shot.
Wright State nearly got on the board in the 86th minute as Amber Kasmer had two chances to strike in against IU. The first shot from Kasmer deflected off the post, but the junior gathered the ball again and had her second attempt blocked by an Indiana defender.
IU held the overall advantage in shots (14-5), Hackerson made three saves and each team took five corner kicks in the contest. Kasmer and Jenna Cooper tallying the other shot for the Raiders.
Wright State is now 0-1 overall this season and will travel to Akron for a Sunday evening match against the Zips at 7:00 on August 23. The Raiders and Zips will be meeting for the first time in school history on Sunday at Lee Jackson Field.
