The Wright State women's soccer team took 12 shots in the match and forced Akron goalkeeper Jeny Wolbert to make nine saves, but WSU allowed two early goals and fell 2-1 at Lee Jackson Field Sunday evening.
The Zips put up some early offense against the Raiders, tallying a pair of goals in the first 23 minutes of the match. The first goal came at the 17:18 mark when Alysia Virkler scored on a header off of a crossing pass from Rachel Phillip.
Then, at the 22:59 mark, the Zips stuck with an unassisted goal from Phillip who broke away from the WSU defense and netted the goal on her lone shot of the contest. The Raiders had chances of their own in the opening frame, taking six shots and forcing the Akron keeper to make six saves to go along with six corner kicks.
The Raiders struck early in the second half with their first goal of the season when Brittany Persaud took a shot from the top-right corner of the 18-yard box and struck net. It is the first career goal for the sophomore – who transferred to WSU from Dayton last spring – and pulled the Raiders within a goal at 2-1 at the 51:49 mark.
The Raiders took another six shots in the second half – three of them on goal – bout could not convert on the match tying marker. In the contest, WSU outshot the Zips (12-6), held the edge (7-6) in corner kicks and the Akron keeper had to make nine saves in the match.
The Raiders will look to end their two-match losing streak when they open their home schedule on Friday, August 28. The Green and Gold will entertain Middle Tennessee starting at 7:00 at Alumni Field.
