8/29/2009 12:00:00 PM | Women's Soccer
The Wright State women's soccer team played with only 10 players for the final 57 minutes of the match with Middle Tennessee, but the Raiders couldn't hold off the MTSU attack late, falling 2-1 in double overtime. WSU pressured the Blue Raiders for most of the second half and overtime, taking eight shots, but couldn't convert on a few opportunities in the defeat.
The Green and Gold struck early in the match when Brittany Persaud sent a crossing pass into the box and Jen Agueci headed it into the net for the opening tally. Agueci sent the shot to the far post from eight yards out for her first marker of the season.
The early lead would hold up until the 30th minute when the Blue Raiders converted on a loose ball in the box after a corner kick. Allison Stallard sent the shot towards the net from the top of the 18-yard box that found the back of the net to knot the score heading into halftime.
At the start of the second half a hard challenge in the WSU end resulted in a red card and the Green and Gold would be forced to play the remainder of the match with 10 players. The Raiders would get the first attack after going a player down, when Kasmer missed connecting on a header inside the box.
Later in the second half, Megan Bush then missed wide with under a minute left with a shot from the right wing.
As the match headed to overtime, WSU would have a golden opportunity just five minutes into the extra frame. A long pass found Amber Kasmer open down field and she had a one-on-one with MTSU keeper Rebecca Cushing, forcing Cushing to make a save on the shot attempt from 15 yards out.
With no score in the first overtime, the game headed to the final ten minutes where Vanessa Mueggler provided the only offense. Mueggler took the first shot of the second overtime, which Meghan Hackerson saved, but Mueggler connected on her next shot from 35 yards out into the top right corner of the net in the 103rd minute.
For the match, MTSU took 13 shots to 10 for the Raiders and Hackerson made seven saves in net for WSU. WSU held the edge in corner kicks (4-3), while recording four shots in goal in the match.
With the loss, Wright State falls to 0-3 on the season and will return to the pitch on Friday, September 4, when they travel to take on IPFW. The Raiders and Mastodons will take to the pitch for a 7:00 kickoff in Fort Wayne.
