In the final 15 minutes of the match, the Wright State women's soccer team went from down and out, to tied and heading into overtime, but Western Michigan struck just minutes into the extra frame to claim a 2-1 victory.
The two teams battled to a scoreless tie through the first 45 minutes, with WMU holding a 3-2 edge in shots. Meghan Hackerson posted two saves in the first stanza and the Broncos took the only two corner kicks of the opening half.
The Raiders had the first good scoring opportunity of the second half when Megan Bush took a high arching shot after the ball ricocheted off a WMU defender. The shot headed towards the crossbar and sailed just high at the 56:55 mark of the contest.
The Broncos (3-2-1) struck with the first goal of the match in the 76th minute when Caitlin Henderson sent a long pass into the box from 45 yards out. Ali Jacobs connected on the header and beat Hackerson to the far post for her first goal of the season.
Wright State (2-4-2) responded with a later goal of their own when Lauren Patterson gathered in a long pass in the Raiders zone. The rookie sent a long pass to Morgan Butler heading up the left flank, which Butler ran down and crossed towards the far post. Bekah Bonny – who missed an opportunity earlier in the contest – connected on the header into the top corner of the goal from three yards out to knot the contest at 1-1.
WSU out-shot the Broncos 4-3 in the second half to knot the shot tally at 6-6 for the match, but Western Michigan would see that only one shot was taken the extra frame. Jacobs struck from the top of the 18-yard box with a strike to the near post. It was her second goal of the match and snapped the Raiders four match unbeaten streak.
In the match, the Broncos took eight corner kicks to one for Wright State, while Hackerson made three saves in the match. Brittany Persaud and Bonny each recorded two shots for WSU in the match, with two other WSU players recording shots.
The Raiders return to Horizon League play as they entertain Valparaiso on Sunday, September 20. The Raiders and Crusaders will kick off at 1:00 as part of a doubleheader with the men's soccer team, who takes on crosstown rival Dayton at 5:00.
