After a two-week break, the Wright State women's soccer team returned to Horizon League play with a 3-0 decision over Valparaiso on Sunday afternoon at Alumni Field.
The Green and Gold jumped out to an early lead with their third first-half goal of the season at the 14:35 mark of the opening frame. A through ball was misplayed by the Valparaiso keeper, who collided with Megan Bush, and Bekah Bonny gathered the loose ball and struck for the second goal in as many games.
The score held at 1-0 at the half with the Crusaders holding a 7-6 edge in shots over the opening 45 minutes. Valpo (3-6, 0-1 Horizon) took the only two corner kicks of the opening frame and WSU keeper Meghan Hackerson made four saves.
WSU (3-4-2, 2-0 Horizon) added to their lead in the 59th minute when Lori Anderson converted on a header off of a Brittany Persaud corner kick from the right flank to push the lead to 2-0. It was the first career goal for Anderson and was the second assist of the season for Persaud.
Jen Agueci would get into the scoring column at the 62:12 mark when she connected on a shot from 25 yards out. The junior unleashed a shot from the right flank that slipped into the top corner to the far post for her second goal of the season.
Hackerson played first 72:07 minutes in the net, making five saves, while sophomore Stephanie Pitstick held the Crusaders scoreless for the final 17:53 to preserve the shutout.
Wright State held a 14-10 edge in shots - outshooting VU 8-3 in the final 45 minutes - and took all six of their corner kicks in the second half to end the match with a 6-3 advantage.
Bonny took four shots in the match, with two on goal, while Agueci launched three shots on goal in the contest. Both of Persaud's shots were credited as on-goal, while Anderson tallied the other WSU shot on net, to give WSU eight shots on target in the tilt.
The Green and Gold continue their homestand with a nonconference tilt versus Gardner-Webb on Friday, September 25. The Raiders will entertain the Runnin' Bulldogs for a 7:30 kick-off under the lights at Alumni Field. The men's soccer team will play their Horizon League opening match at 5:00 that evening versus Green Bay.
