Late Goal Lifts Women to 1-0 Victory Over Loyola
9/6/2009 12:00:00 PM | Women's Soccer
It took nearly 87 minutes, but the Wright State women's soccer team finally converted to earn a 1-0 victory over Loyola Sunday at Alumni Field. Meghan Hackerson made four saves to hold the Ramblers scoreless and Brittany Persaud netted the lone strike of the match to help WSU claim their first win over Loyola since the 2005 season.
The first half was played scoreless by the two teams, with LU holding an 8-3 edge in shots, putting three of those shots on goal. Hackerson converted on all three save opportunities, while Loyola took the only corner kick of the half.
In the second half, WSU had a few good scoring chances that went by the wayside before Persaud would convert on her second goal of the season. The play was set up on a Loyola turnover at midfield, before Megan Bush switched fields with a crossing pass to Persaud. The sophomore corralled the pass, juked a defender and sent a laser shot into the top corner of the net at the near post.
It was redemption for Persaud who had a free kick from just outside the 18-yard box nabbed at the last second by Loyola keeper Katie Groesch to keep the match scoreless. It was the second goal of the season for Persaud and was the first assist of the year for Bush.
This marked the fourth straight contest that Wright State has netted just one goal and pushed their unbeaten streak to two matches. The Ramblers (0-6, 0-1 Horizon) held an 11-8 edge in shots, took the only two corner kicks, but WSU connected on the only goal of the contest.
The Raiders are now 1-3-1 overall and improve to 1-0 in Horizon League play with their league-opening victory. The next action for the Green and Gold will be on Thursday, September 10, when they travel to Toledo for a 5:00 kickoff.
