Women Collect League Victory at Milwaukee, 67-50

Molly Fox and Kanisha Ward each scored 15 points while LaShawna Thomas added 12 as the women's basketball team built a 21-point lead on its way to a 67-50 victory at Milwaukee on Saturday, its first Horizon League victory of the season.
The Wright State defense came out with some solid pressure to start the contest, forcing four turnovers on the first eight UWM possessions, and took an early 10-3 lead.
The WSU lead would hover around six points for most of the first half and eventually reach nine points at the 10:00 mark when Ward hit a runner in the lane and was fouled, converting the free throw, to push the Raiders ahead 27-18. The Panthers cut it to four points late in the half, but Fox made the final field goal of the half with 3:09 to play and Wright State took a 29-23 lead into the half.
In the opening frame, WSU forced 17 turnovers and shot 48 percent from the field to take a lead into the break for the first time in five games. WSU turned the ball over only seven times in during the first 20 minutes, a first half season low, and assisted on seven of their 12 field goals. Ward scored eight for WSU, while Richardson and Thomas each chipped in six.
After Milwaukee (6-9, 1-3 Horizon) scored the first two points of the second half, WSU rattled off seven straight to grab an 11-point lead. Fox hit a pair of layups and Ward knocked down a three-pointer from the wing to put the Raiders up 36-25.
The Raider lead would shrink to nine points when Jodie McClain sank a pair of foul shots with 14:11 to play. Over the next six minutes the Raiders would extend their lead with a 10-0 spurt and, after a Lindsay Laur free throw, Tanni Scott's basket gave WSU a 20-point lead at 53-33.
Wright State (5-8, 1-2 Horizon) would close out the victory with a combination of solid free throw shooting and good clock management to claim their first Horizon League win of the season. The Raiders were 10-of-14 from the free throw stripe in the second half and held UWM to just 28-percent shooting from the field.
WSU shot 45-percent from the floor in the victory and held a 35-29 advantage in rebounds. The Raiders forced 24 turnovers and allowed the Panthers just 15 field goals in the contest. Wright State scored 32 points in the paint to go along with 26 points off turnovers and 20 second chance points to snap their five-game losing streak in the final game of their eight-game road trip.
Fox, who made her first career three pointers in the contest, tied for the game-high with Ward, each scoring 15 points. Ward also dished out six assists and three rebounds against the Panthers. Thomas scored 12 for WSU and Fox added eight rebounds to lead all players in the game.
The Green and Gold return to action on Thursday, January 14, with their first home contest in over a month when Loyola visits the Nutter Center. The Raiders and Ramblers will tip off at 7:00.
