Behind a Morgan Rice goal late in the first half, the Wright State women's soccer team upset Horizon League leader Milwaukee 1-0 on Senior Day Sunday at Alumni Field.
Rice tallied the game-winner, the first goal of her collegiate career, at the 40:29 mark of the first half. It came off a corner kick by Brittany Persaud, her ninth assist of the year, tying her with Mary Beth Langefeld in 1992 for the second-most assists by a Raider in a season.
Despite Milwaukee (10-6-2, 6-2 Horizon) outshooting the Raiders 19-7, the WSU defense and goalkeepers Meghan Hackerson and Brooke McCurdy preserved the shutout from there as Hackerson recorded six saves in playing the first half and McCurdy four as she was in goal the final 45 minutes.
The win was the first for Wright State over Milwaukee since the Raiders won 1-0 on November 8, 2000 in the championship match of the Midwestern Collegiate Conference Tournament at Alumni Field, sending WSU to the third of three straight NCAA appearances. The Panthers had gone 9-0-1 against the Raiders since then, with the tie coming during the 2005 season.
Wright State (10-8, 5-3 Horizon) will be the #4 seed in the Horizon League Tournament and will host #5 seed Loyola in a first-round match on Sunday, October 31, at Alumni Field starting at 1:00. The semifinals and finals of the tournament will take place at the Butler Bowl in Indianapolis November 5 and 7 as the Bulldogs claimed the #1 seed with a win over Cleveland State and WSU's win over Milwaukee.
