Softball Drops Pair at USF LaQuinta Inn and Suites Tournament

The Wright State softball team dropped a pair of games in the first day of the USF LaQuinta Inn and Suites Tournament Friday in Tampa, falling to Michigan State 10-2 and 6-1 to host South Florida.

In the first game of the day, the Raiders jumped to a 2-0 lead against Michigan State with a pair of runs in the first. Briauna Birl reached on an error to start the frame and after she stole second, Kristen Bradshaw walked and Jamie Perkins singled to left to load the bases. A walk to Mollie Berry forced in a run and Bradshaw later scored on a passed ball.

The Spartans, however, would score a run of their own in the first and then took the lead for good with four in the third. MSU added three more in the fourth and two more in the sixth to round out the scoring.

In the second game, South Florida scored twice on a pair of solo home runs in the third to open the scoring, but WSU answered with a run of its own in its half of the inning. Back-to-back hits from Berry and Birl set the stage for Louie Haney, who singled up the middle to drive in Berry.

South Florida, though, tacked on four runs in the fourth and neither team scored the rest of the way.

Birl, Haney and Bradshaw each had two hits in the second game to lead the Raider offense.

Wright State (1-3) continues play in the tournament with two more games Saturday evening, taking on North Carolina State at 6:00 followed by Hofstra at 8:15.
