The Wright State softball team split in the second day of the USF LaQuinta Inn and Suites Tournament in Tampa Saturday, defeating North Carolina State 10-6 before dropping a 5-1 decision to Hofstra.
WSU opened the scoring against the Wolfpack with a single run in the second as Lindsay Barrett was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, but North Carolina State responded with three of its own in the bottom of the inning.
The Raiders, though, came right back to tie it with two in the third. With one out, Kristen Bradshaw singled and scored as Jamie Perkins doubled to left center. Perkins advanced to third as China Frost had a hit through the right side of the infield and came in to score as the right fielder had an error in fielding Frost's single.
The Wolfpack went up 5-3 with single runs in the third and fifth, but Wright State had a comeback to tie, this time with two in the sixth. After hits by Briauna Birl and a Louie Haney bunt, Bradshaw drove in both runners with a double to left.
The Raiders then took the lead for good with five in the seventh. With one out, singles by Berry, Birl and Haney loaded the bases and Bradshaw followed with a two-run hit up the middle. Perkins reached on a fielder's choice to reload the bases and two more came in as Frost had a hit to drive one and an error plated the other.
North Carolina State picked up a run in the bottom of the seventh, but Sharon Palma (2-1) pitched out of a bases-loaded jam to earn the win.
WSU collected 18 hits altogether in the game, with Frost leading the way with four and Bradshaw, Perkins and Berry having three each.
The offense, however, was silenced in the Hofstra game as Pride pitcher Erin Wade allowed just one run and scattered seven hits in earning the complete-game win.
Hofstra tacked on single runs in the first, second and fourth innings and scored twice in the fifth before the Raiders broke up the shutout with a run in the sixth on a RBI single by pinch-hitter Malerie Klingler.
Frost added two more hits against Hofstra to pace the WSU offense.
Wright State (2-4) wraps up play at the USF LaQuinta Inn and Suites Tournament Sunday morning by taking on North Dakota State at 11:15.
