Softball Drops 5-3 Decision to Mississippi Valley State

The Wright State softball team tried to rally in the seventh, but a four-run third proved to be the difference as the Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils held on for a 5-3 win over the Raiders in the opening game of the Bulldog Classic Friday afternoon in Starkville, Mississippi.
MVSU scored a run in the second before WSU answered with a run of its own in the third. Hits by Briauna Birl and Louie Haney started the frame and after both moved up a base on an error, Birl scored on a China Frost single to left.
The Devils, though, took the lead for good with four in the third, taking advantage of a pair of errors.
The Raiders cut the deficit in half with two runs in the seventh. Justine Shilt reached on catcher's interference to lead off the inning and WSU loaded the bases with one out as Lindsay Barrett was hit by a pitch and Birl singles. A Haney single and a Kristen Bradshaw walk resulted in two runs, but the rally and game ended on a force out at the plate and a strikeout.
Birl and Haney each had two hits to pace the offense.
Wright State (5-8) continues play in the Bulldog Classic Saturday with two games, taking on Troy at 11:00 followed by host Mississippi State at 5:00.
