The Wright State women's basketball team rallied from an 18-point deficit to trail by four in the final seconds, but could get no closer as the Detroit Titans held on for a 58-54 victory in the regular-season finale for both teams Saturday afternoon at the Nutter Center.
The Raiders led for most of the first half, going up as much as 24-17 following a LaShawna Thomas jumper with 5:52 remaining in the period. The margin was still six on a Molly Fox layup at the 4:26 mark before Detroit closed the half with a 7-0 run, three coming from Brigid Mulroy, to hold a 27-26 halftime advantage.
Detroit shot 52 percent in the opening 20 minutes compared to 39 percent for WSU, but the Raiders held an 18-11 rebounding edge, including 6-0 on the offensive end, which resulted in a 8-0 differential in second-chance points.
The Titan run stretched to 17-0 as Detroit scored the first 10 points of the second half, including three straight Mulroy three-pointers, and another 9-0 burst extended the margin to 49-31 with 12:19 to play.
Threes from Kanisha Ward and Erica Richardson layups followed by another Bennett triple cut the deficit to 54-48 with four minutes left.
WSU again trailed by six on two Ta-myra Davis foul shots at the 2:11, but neither team scored until Fox hit a layup with four seconds left to round out the scoring.
Detroit finished the game shooting 49 percent from the field, including seven of 15 from behind the arc, while the Raiders were at 40 percent, but just four of 18 from three-point range. WSU, though, led 34-24 on the boards, 30-20 in points in the paint and 11-2 in second-chance points.
Ward, in her final regular-season home game, led Wright State as the senior guard scored 13 points while fellow senior Richardson had 11 along with seven rebounds.
Mulroy paced all scorers with 21 for Detroit (16-13, 14-4 Horizon), including six of seven from three-point range, while Yar Shayok had 12.
Wright State (10-18, 6-12 Horizon) now turns its attention to the Speedway Horizon League Tournament, which begins on Monday as the #7 seed Raiders host #10 seed Youngstown State at 7:00.
