Wright State scored twice in both the third and the fourth innings and, behind the pitching of Melanie Heyne and Allison Cox, made that stand up for a 4-0 Horizon League softball victory over Youngstown State in the series finale Sunday in Canfield, Ohio.
The Raiders opened the scoring with a pair of runs in the third. Briauna Birl led off with a walk and advanced to third as Louie Haney reached on an error. Cox walked to load the bases with two out and China Frost followed with a hit up the middle to plate Birl and Haney.
WSU tacked on two more in the fourth and, again, Birl started the rally, this time with a one-out triple to left center. Kristen Bradshaw walked, stole second and went to third as Haney drove in Birl with a bloop single to left. Jamie Perkins then knocked in Bradshaw on a ground out to make it 4-0.
That would be more than enough for Heyne and Cox, who combined on the shutout, holding the Penguins to just four singles. Heyne (7-11) went the first four innings to earn the victory, while Cox pitched the final three for her third save of the year and second of the series.
Offensively, Perkins and Birl led the way with two hits each.
Wright State (16-22-1, 7-5 Horizon) heads to Butler this week for a midweek Horizon League series, starting with a 3:00 doubleheader on Tuesday.
