Softball Splits at UIC

The seventh inning proved to be the difference in both games as Wright State and UIC split a Horizon League softball doubleheader Saturday at Flames Field. The Raiders scored five in that inning of the opener to win 11-9 while the Flames tallied a run to win 5-4 in the nightcap.
WSU opened the scoring with three in the first, including RBI singles from Justine Shilt and Mollie Berry, and added two more in the second on a Louie Haney double and another Shilt run-scoring single to go up 5-0. UIC, however, tied it with two in the second, one in the third and two more in the fourth and the Flames went in front 8-5 with three in the fifth.
The Raiders picked up a run in the sixth as China Frost singled and Shilt drove her in with a double, but the margin was still three at 9-6 heading to the seventh as the Flames tacked on a run in the bottom of the frame.
Wright State, though, would put together a rally in the seventh as the Raiders batted around in scoring five times. An error followed by a Kristen Bradshaw double resulted in the first run and after hits by Haney and Frost tied the game at nine, Shilt put WSU in front for good with a two-run home run to right center, her sixth of the season.
Sharon Palma (7-10) then set down the Flames in order in the bottom of the seventh to earn the win. Offensively, Shilt was four-for-five with five RBI while Haney also had four hits and three runs scored and Bradshaw had three hits and scored twice.
The Raiders again jumped out an early in game two, scoring four times in the first, but, like the first game, UIC would tie the score, this time with four of its own in the bottom of the fifth. Three of those runs came on a home run off the bat of Shannon Kehr.
The Flames then won the game in the seventh as four straight reached base, two on walks and two on hits.
Bradshaw and Berry each had two hits in the nightcap for WSU.
Wright State (25-27-1, 15-8 Horizon) closes out the regular season Sunday with a single game against UIC (22-32, 15-8 Horizon) starting at 1:00 Eastern. That game will determine the #2 and #3 seeds for next week's Horizon League Tournament in Cleveland.
