Men's Soccer Drops Heartbreaker to #24 Xavier

The Wright State men's soccer team was up 2-0 lead most of the match, only to see #24 Xavier score three times in a three-minute span to win 3-2 Saturday night at Alumni Field.
The Raiders jumped out to that 2-0 with a pair of goals in the first five minutes of the contest. WSU's first goal came at the 3:33 mark of the first half as a cross from the right side of the box by Bryce Rockwell-Ashton went off a Xavier player and into the goal.
Wright State then made it 2-0 just 1:12 later as Brian Cothern connected on a wide-open goal, his first of the season, on an assist by Kenji Goldman, his first of the year.
It stayed that way until Gino Depaoli scored the first goal for Xavier (6-1-1) at the 78:02 mark of the second half. Two fouls then resulted in penalties kicks for Luke Spencer, who connected on both (78:53 and 80:33), to round out the scoring.
"Tonight's game was a great lesson for our young group," said head coach Bryan Davis. "We had some great moments, but Xavier, to their credit, never gave up and found a way to win."
"It's disappointing that the outcome was decided by two penalties within two minutes, but that is out of our control," added Davis. "What is in our control, though, is how we get ready for Valparaiso on Friday. We will get better this week."
Wright State (6-3-1) returns to Horizon League play on Friday, October 7, at home against Valparaiso starting at 7:00.
