Five Raiders were named as the men's soccer All-Horizon League teams were announced Monday by the league office.? Selected to the First Team were senior Brian Cothern and sophomore Bryce Rockwell-Ashton while freshmen Craig Feehan, Justin Laird and Gustav Svensson were each chosen to the All-Newcomer Team.? Feehan was also tabbed as the league's Newcomer of the Year.
Cothern (Galena, OH/Big Walnut), a midfielder, tied for third on the squad with three goals and was second with three assists.? Two of his three goals were game-winners against Loyola and Bowling Green and his three assists came versus IUPUI, Milwaukee and Loyola.
Rockwell-Ashton (Fort Wayne, IN/South Side), a midfielder, tied for the team lead in goals with five and led the way with five assists.? He scored the game-winning goal at Marquette and Detroit and also had goals against Evansville, Xavier and Milwaukee.? His five assists were versus Northeastern, Cleveland State, Milwaukee, Green Bay and Bowling Green.
Cothern and Rockwell-Ashton are the first two Raiders to be selected to the First Team since Braden Fleak in 2008.
Feehan (Pittsburgh, PA/Shaler), a goalkeeper, posted four shutouts on the season as he finished with a 1.03 goals against average overall.? The reigning Horizon League Player of the Week, Feehan also recorded 67 saves on the year, including eight against Northeastern and at Butler last Saturday to help the Raiders secure the #2 seed for this week's Horizon League Tournament.
Feehan is the sixth WSU player to ever be named Newcomer of the Year, joining Marco Elcock (1998), Bret Jones (1999), Ricky Strong (2000), Fleak (2006) and Carl Ebers (2007).
Laird (Milwaukee, WI/Hartford Union), a midfielder, tied with Rockwell-Ashton for tops on the team with five goals, those coming against IUPUI, Northeastern, Marquette, Cleveland State and Milwaukee.? He also assisted the game-winning goal at Marquette on September 11.
Svensson (Lund, Sweden), a defender, was a key component of the Raider defense that recorded a 1.03 goals against average for the season.? He also tallied the assist of the lone goal in a 1-0 win at Butler last Saturday.
This year's three All-Newcomer Team selections ties with the 1998 season for the most ever for WSU.
Wright State (10-6-2, 5-2-1 Horizon) reached the 10-win plateau in 2011 for the first time since finishing 10-10 in 2005. The Raiders also guaranteed themselves of closing the year above the .500 mark since going 12-7-1 in 2001.The second-place finish for WSU marks the first time the Raiders have placed second in the standings since going 5-1-1 in the Midwestern Collegiate Conference in 1998, a year that saw Wright State advance to the conference championship match.
The Raiders will play in the first Horizon League semifinal on Friday, November 11, at Brown Field on the Valparaiso campus at 5:00 Eastern.? WSU will face the higher remaining seed out of Tuesday's quarterfinals (either Cleveland State, Green Bay or UIC), with the finals set for Sunday, November 13, at 2:00 Dayton time.
