David Korn, formerly an assistant coach at the University of Denver, has been named an assistant men's soccer coach at Wright State University, WSU head coach Bryan Davis announced Thursday.
In Korn's three seasons with Denver, the Pioneers compiled an overall record of 24-24-10, including a 16-7-4 mark in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF). During the 2010 season, Denver finished 9-7-4 overall and won the MPSF regular-season title with a record of 6-2-2. The Pioneers received an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament, where they were edged 1-0 in double overtime by UC Santa Barbara in the first round. Eight players received All-MPSF honors, two on the First Team.
The 2009 season saw Denver advance to the MPSF Tournament semifinals. Five Pioneers were named All-MPSF and freshman forward Alex Tarnoczi was named the league's Newcomer of the Year. In 2008, Korn helped the team to a 10-7-2 overall mark while going 8-1-1 in MPSF play.
"Over my two years here we have produced two head coaches out of our assistant position," said Davis. "This is something I take a lot of pride in as it is such a great compliment to the guys we hire, the athletic department, and the kids that work every single day to get us towards our goals. The result of these changes, however, is the reality that we need to continue to fill this position with good people. Dave Korn, through the hiring process, made it very clear to me that as tough as it is to replace good people, he clearly is up to the task and will do a great job for us."
"Coach Korn comes from a program at Denver with Coach (Bobby) Muus and Coach (Carson) Porter that I have tremendous respect for," added Davis. "They do things the right way and have had a lot of success. Dave will bring that valuable experience working with those guys to us at Wright State. I am very pleased to have him on board."
Prior to Denver, Korn served as an assistant coach at Lafayette in 2007, where he helped lead the Leopards to a 10-4-6 record and a berth in the Patriot League Tournament championship game.
Along with his college coaching career, Korn has had several coaching stints at the club level. He has been the head coach of the Colorado Fusion Soccer Club since 2008, leading the team to the U17 Colorado State Cup finals. He was also the director of coaching at the Foothills Futbol Club, the second largest club in Southern Arizona, from 2006-07. At Foothills, he oversaw the implementation and education of more than 35 coaches.
While at Foothills, Korn also served as head coach and the director of sponsorship/ fundraising at the Tucson Soccer Academy. Additionally, Korn was an assistant varsity coach and junior varsity head coach at Salpointe Catholic (AZ) High School, where he helped guide the Lancers to the 5A State Finals.
Korn was the head coach for the Youth Olympic Girls Program (YOP) from 2004-06 and the Canyon Del Oro Soccer Club from 2001-05. He has worked at various soccer camps, including ones at UCLA, Santa Clara and Duke.
The 2007 Arizona Youth Soccer Association Coach of the Year, Korn was nominated in both 2003 and 2004 for the Boy's Youth Soccer Coach of the Year Award. He was also named Southern Arizona's Youth Referee of the Year in 2003.
A 2007 graduate of the University of Arizona with a bachelor's degree in business management, Korn earned a master's degree in organizational leadership from Denver in 2010 and currently holds a USSF `B' License.
