The Wright State volleyball team opened Horizon League play on a winning note Friday with a sweep of Youngstown State at the C.J. McLin Gymnasium.
WSU led 17-13 in the opening set until YSU scored four straight to tie it. Alaina McAuley, however, broke the deadlock with a kill and three consecutive Raider points, two on kills from Mariah Nussbaum and Heidi Splinter, made it 22-18.
Youngstown State then led 6-4 in the second set before Wright State eventually went out in front to stay at 12-10 on an Ashley Langjahr kill and a Splinter service ace. The margin later grew to 20-13 on four straight points, including two Splinter kills.
The Penguins again led early in the final set, going up 15-12 on a Jenna Cavanaugh ace, only to see the Raiders regain the advantage with four in a row. WSU later tied five unanswered points, three as a result of McAuley kills, to break an 18-18 tie.
Wright State had just a slight edge in kills (35-30), but the Raiders outhit the Penguins .206-.058.
McAuley paced WSU with 11 kills, six coming in the final set, while Splinter had eight kills and 17 digs.
Alexis Egler led Youngstown State (1-11, 0-1 Horizon) with a double-double of 11 kills and 14 digs.
