The Wright State men's soccer team opened Horizon League play on a winning note Saturday afternoon with a 2-1 overtime decision at Detroit.
Both teams scored their regulation goals as the result of penalty kicks. At the 25:03 mark of the first half, Kenji Goldman connected on one to give the Raiders the lead. It was the first goal of the season for the senior defender and kept WSU perfect on penalty kick attempts in 2011 (4-4).
Detroit (3-5, 0-1 Horizon), though, answered with one of its own at the 54:11 mark of the second half as Otieno Victor tallied his fourth goal of the year.
In overtime, Wright State recorded the game-winner at the 94:44 mark as sophomore forward Bryce Rockwell-Ashton dribbled to the left, fired from 17 yards out and hit the left side of the goal. Seth Petrey notched the assist, his first of the season.
"Great team win today against an experienced Detroit team," said head coach Bryan Davis. "The guys really embraced their roles and executed them as well as we have all season. The outstanding finish by Bryce to win the game capped off a great effort over the past seven games away from home. We will get back to work tomorrow and focus on a very strong opponent in Cleveland State for our first game on campus on Tuesday."
The Raiders, who picked up their first Horizon League win since defeating Loyola 1-0 in Chicago on October 17, 2009, held a 15-8 shot advantage and led 9-2 in corner kicks. The match also saw the two teams combine for 38 fouls and nine yellow cards.
Wright State (5-2-1, 1-0 Horizon), which wrapped the seven-game swing away from home at 4-2-1, finally returns home for the first time since August 26 on Tuesday, September 27, with a Horizon League matchup against Cleveland State starting at 7:00. It will be the first time that the Raiders have played on campus in 2011 as an exhibition match against Cincinnati State and the season opener versus Marshall were both played at the Athletes in Action complex in Xenia.
