The Wright State men's soccer team led 2-0 in the second half, only to see Valparaiso rally for five goals down the stretch for a 5-2 victory in Horizon League action Friday night at Brown Field.
Sophomore forward Marquis Payton gave the Raiders a 1-0 lead just before the halftime break as he scored his second goal of the season at the 44:41 mark. Payton connected on a shot from 25 yards out over the Crusader goalkeeper Nico Campbell into the upper left corner. Freshman midfielder AJ Paterson was credited with the assist, his third of the year.
Valparaiso had a chance to tie at the horn, but a shot by Zev Taublieb hit the far post.
Wes Cain then extended the WSU lead to 2-0 with a score at the 51:18 mark of the second half as his shot from inside the box went into the left side of the goal. It was the second goal of the year for the junior midfielder.
The Crusaders (7-2-3, 2-1 Horizon), who came into the week ranked #24 in the RPI, started their comeback at the 52:36 mark as Jordan Aidoud converted a penalty kick. After Aidoud added another goal to tie it at the 76:56 mark, an own goal at the 78:19 mark gave Valparaiso a 3-2 lead.
Valpo then added two insurance goals in the closing minutes to round out the scoring.
"This controversial game serves as an important for our guys," said WSU head coach Bryan Davis. "No lead is safe and good team have to be put away. Exterior factors hurt us tonight, much of which was out of our control. We need to fix this by making sure what's in our control we can manage. It will get better and we will be fine."
The Crusaders led 14-8 in shots while the Raiders had a 5-4 edge in corner kicks.
Wright State (7-4-1, 2-2 Horizon) returns home to host Cleveland State on Wednesday, October 15, at 7:00 at Alumni Field.
