The Wright State volleyball team dropped a pair of matches in the final day of the Bruin Classic Saturday in Nashville, Tennessee. The Raiders fell to Liberty 17-25, 25-19, 25-12, 25-27, 15-11 and to Northern Kentucky 25-18, 25-19, 25-19.
WSU came out strong against Liberty, hitting .385 in the opening set overall as Haley Garr hit .833 (5/0/6) and Megan Hopkins .500 (5/0/10). Wright State, though, cooled to .095 and .000 as the Flames took the second and third sets, respectively.
The Raiders broke away from a 10-10 tie in the fourth set with a 7-1 run, a run that included a pair of Marisa Aiello service aces and two Hopkins kills, only to see Liberty eventually tie it again at 24. It was tied again at 25 before WSU forced the decisive fifth set by taking advantage of a Flame service error and attack error.
The two teams were then tied seven times in the final set before three straight points put Liberty up for good at 12-9. A service error broke that string, but Wright State would get no closer.
The Flames had a slight edge in kills (58-55), but outhit the Raiders .200-.133 and had seven service errors compared to 12 for WSU.
Wright State had four reach double figures in kills as Garr had 13 in hitting .409 for the match, Hopkins 12, Katie Klusman 11 and Ashley Langjahr 10. Maddie Lohmeier posted a double-double of 41 assists and 12 digs while Jessie Thornton had 25 digs and Alana Smith 14.
In the first set of the NKU match, the Norse maintained a slight advantage most of the way before scoring the final four points. Northern Kentucky then opened up a 12-6 lead in the second set and gradually pulled away from a 9-9 tie in the final set.
Klusman paced the Raiders with 11 kills while Lohmeier had 31 assists, Thornton 19 digs and Miranda Puthoff 12 digs.
Hopkins was named to the All-Tournament Team as she collected 30 kills in three matches, including 12 in the Liberty match and 10 on Friday against Belmont.
Wright State (3-11) opens Horizon League play next weekend as the Raiders travel to Northeast Ohio to face Cleveland State on Friday, September 26, at 7:00 and Youngstown State on Saturday, September 27, at 4:00.
