For the second consecutive year and third time in the last five seasons, the men's soccer team will play in the Horizon League Championship match as the Raiders defeated #1 seed and host UIC 2-1 in the semifinals Thursday night.
WSU grabbed the early lead at the 28:29 mark as sophomore forward Jalim Bayo scored his second goal of the season. Bayo received a pass to the left side from junior midfielder Zach Zwiesler and connected on a shot to the far side of the goal. It was the first assist of the year for Zwiesler.
UIC tied the contest with a goal just 5:22 into the second half, only to see junior forward Peguy Ngatcha tally the game-winner at the 65:56 mark on a penalty kick. It was the team-leading seventh goal of the season for Ngatcha, who earlier this week was named First Team All-Horizon League.
Junior goalkeeper Tyler Blackmer recorded five saves on the night and allowed just the one goal despite the Flames outshooting the Raiders 14-11.
Wright State (12-7-1) will face Oakland, who defeated Cleveland State 1-0 in overtime in the first semifinal, in the championship match Saturday night at 7:00 Eastern at UIC's Flames Field. It is a rematch of last year's final, which the Golden Grizzlies won 2-1 at Oakland. Oakland also won the regular-season meeting this season, a 2-0 decision at Alumni Field on November 6.
