The Wright State women's basketball team controlled the first three quarters and then held off a UIC rally in the fourth for a 73-62 decision in the Horizon League opener for both teams Wednesday night at WSU's Nutter Center.
WSU jumped out to an early 8-1 lead, only to see the Flames cut the deficit to 10-8 following a Teodora Zagorac three. The Raiders, though, answered with a Mackenzie Taylor three and a Lexi Smith layup and a later basket from Antania Hayes made it 17-10 after a quarter.
The margin was still seven late in the second period before Wright State outscored UIC 7-3 the final 1:49, capped off by a Kim Demmings layup just ahead of the horn, to take a 28-17 advantage into halftime.
WSU shot 44 percent in the opening two quarters compared to 25 percent for the Flames.
A 13-2 run over a five-minute span in the third stanza, eight of those coming from Emily Vogelpohl, extended the Raider lead to its biggest of the night at 46-23 with 2:33 remaining.
The UIC offense, however, would come alive from there, closing to within eight in the final minute at 68-60 before Wright State sealed the victory with five foul shots.
WSU shot 46 percent for the game overall and hit 14 of 24 free throws while the Flames shot 33 percent for the contest and were seven of 13 at the stripe.
Vogelpohl led all scorers with 20 points while two Raiders posted double-doubles as Hayes had 15 points and 11 rebounds and Demmings 14 points and 10 boards. Symone Denham added nine points and eight assists.
Melita Emanuel-Carr paced UIC (9-3, 0-1 Horizon) with 19 points, including 13 of the Flames' 32 points in the fourth quarter, while Ruvanna Campbell recorded a double-double of 14 points and 16 rebounds. Caitlin Garant and Brittany Byrd each had 10 points.
Wright State (11-3, 1-0 Horizon) opens the 2016 portion of its schedule on New Year's Day as the Raiders host Valparaiso in a 2:00 matinee.
