The Wright State softball team opened Horizon League play Friday with a 5-1 win over Cleveland State at the WSU Softball Field.
The Raiders, who were the visitors on the scoreboard due to the series being moved from Cleveland to Dayton, opened the scoring with two runs in the top of the third. Angie Clark led off with a single up the middle and advanced to second on an Alexis Mayle bunt. Macey Gunther then hit a grounder to first that the Vikings tried to retire Clark on, but were too late, resulting in runners on at first and third. After Gunther stole second, both came in as Jess Gorman had a hit to center.
WSU extended the lead to 5-0 with three more in the sixth. A Gorman walk and hits by Libby Pfeffer and Kortney Tackett loaded the bases and a Reagan Stofcheck ground out made it 3-0. Another grounder by Hanna Floyd resulted in another run and the final run came in as Mayle walked with the bases loaded.
Cynthia Woodard hit a solo home run in the sixth, but that turned out to be the only run Montana Wear (4-10) would allow in a complete-game effort for Wright State as she allowed just three hits and no walks while striking out six.
Wright State (5-17, 1-0 Horizon) and Cleveland State (12-9, 0-1 Horizon) will wrap up the three-game series with a doubleheader Saturday starting at 1:00.Team Stats
