Softball Splits in Second Day of Samford Tournament

Wright State split a doubleheader with UIC Friday at the WSU Softball Field as the Flames took the opener 7-1 before the Raiders won the nightcap 7-6.

The Flames scored single runs in the second and fourth in the first game before breaking it open with five runs in the top of the sixth. WSU's lone run came in the bottom of the sixth as after Libby Pfeffer was hit by a pitch, Becka Peterson singled and both runners moved up on a Reagan Stofcheck ground out, Kortney Tackett's grounder plated Pfeffer.

UIC again opened the scoring in the second game, tallying two runs in the first, but back came Wright State with a pair of its own in the bottom of the frame as the Raiders took advantage of three errors.

The Flames went back in front with a run in the third, only to see WSU tie it again as Macey Gunther doubled, went to third on a Jess Gorman ground out and scored on another grounder, this time by Becka Peterson.

UIC again regained the advantage with two in the fourth, but Wright State would take its first lead of the day with three in the bottom of the inning. Gunther drove in the first run with an infield hit and Gorman followed with a two-run double to center.

WSU then picked up a big insurance run in the sixth as Alexis Mayle reached on an error and scored as Gunther doubled down the left field line.

The Flames scored a run in the seventh, but stranded the potential tying run on second as the game ended.

Ashley Sharp (5-11) picked up the win in the second game for the Raiders while offensively, Gunther had three hits, three runs scored and two RBI.

Wright State (16-28, 11-5 Horizon) and UIC (20-18, 11-5 Horizon) are scheduled to play the rubber match of the series Saturday at 1:00. Before the game, WSU's four seniors--Angie Clark, Gorman, Stofcheck and Tackett--will be honored.
