The Wright State softball team remained in contention for the Horizon League regular-season title Friday at Oakland, going in front to stay with single runs in the fifth and sixth for a 4-2 decision in the series opener.
The Raiders wasted little time in taking the lead, scoring a run in the first. Honnah Susor reached on an infield hit to start the game and moved up to second on a Jess Gorman ground out. One out later, Becka Peterson singled just out of the reach of the second baseman to plate Susor.
After WSU starting pitcher Montana Wear escaped a Golden Grizzly threat in the first, Wright State added another run in the second. Hanna Floyd was hit by a pitch to begin the frame and after going to second on a Kortney Tackett grounder, scored as Angie Clark reached on a throwing error on a bunt attempt.
Oakland tied the contest with two runs in the bottom of the fourth, only to see the Raiders go back in front for good with a run in the fifth. With one out, Peterson doubled to left center and pinch-runner Rachael Oakley came in as Reagan Stofcheck singled to center.
WSU added an insurance run in the sixth as Clark singled to left, went to second on an Alexis Mayle sacrifice and scored on a Gorman hit.
The Golden Grizzlies had their first two batters reach in the bottom of the sixth, but Wear retired the next three batters to keep the score at 4-2. Oakland then had a runner on first in the seventh before a grounder ended the game.
Wear (12-19) scattered eight hits in picking up the win while, offensively, Susor and Peterson led the way with two hits each.
Wright State (18-30, 12-6 Horizon) trails both Oakland (23-21, 13-5 Horizon) and UIC (22-19, 13-5 Horizon) by one game with each team closing out the regular season Saturday with a doubleheader. WSU and OU will have a twinbill starting at 1:00 while the Flames host Cleveland State, also starting at 1:00.
The Raiders can claim the league title if they sweep the Golden Grizzlies and if the Vikings take both games from UIC. If the Flames and Oakland tie, Oakland wins the tiebreaker due to winning two of three in their series in April. If WSU and UIC tie, the Flames win the tiebreaker due to winning two of three at the WSU Softball Field last weekend.
