The Wright State softball team split a pair of games in the opening day of the Horizon League Tournament Wednesday in Rochester, Michigan, falling to Valparaiso 7-1 before eliminating Cleveland State 1-0.

WSU took the early lead in the first game of the day with a run in the first. Macey Gunther led off with a single up the middle, stole second and scored on a two-out single to center off the bat of Reagan Stofcheck.

That lead was short-lived, however, as the Crusaders sent 11 batters to the plate in the second, scoring six times on seven hits. Valparaiso then added another run in the sixth.

The Raiders managed nine hits in the contest, including two from Becka Peterson and Kortney Tackett, but stranded nine baserunners. In the circle, Ashley Sharp allowed just an unearned run in 5.1 innings of relief.

The second game was a pitcher's duel between Sharp and Cleveland State's Alex Radjen, with neither team scoring through the first four innings. The Vikings loaded the bases with no outs in the fourth and the Raiders had two on with one out in their half of the inning, but neither team came away with a run.

That changed, though, as Wright State tacked on a run in the fifth. Alexis Mayle led off with a double off the fence in center and, one out later, Jess Gorman knocked her in with a double of her own to center.

Sharp (8-11) allowed just one hit over the final two innings as she recorded her second career shutout, scattering six hits in the process. On the day, the freshman righthander allowed just an unearned run in 12.1 innings.

Libby Pfeffer paced the Raider offense with two hits in the second game.

Wright State (20-32) returns to action on Thursday at 5:00 in another elimination contest. The Raiders will take on the lowest seed of the winner's bracket semifinal losers, which will either be #2 seed UIC, #4 seed Green Bay or #5 seed Valparaiso.
