Softball Holds Off Valparaiso in HL Tournament

The Wright State softball team built a 4-0 lead through six innings, but had to hold off a Valparaiso rally in the seventh before defeating the Crusaders 4-3 Thursday at the Horizon League Tournament in Rochester, Michigan.
It was all Raiders in the early going as the offense came alive for a three-run first inning. After Honnah Susor walked and Jess Gorman reached on a bunt single to start the frame and Hanna Floyd bunted both runners into scoring position, Becka Peterson drove in Susor with a sacrifice fly to center.
Reagan Stofcheck kept the inning goinig with a walk and Libby Pfeffer and Kortney Tackett followed with back-to-back singles to knock in Gorman and Stofcheck, respectively, and extend the margin to 3-0.
WSU tacked on what turned out to be the winning run in the fifth as Floyd walked and came in score on back-to-back hits from Peterson and Stofcheck.
Wright State starting pitcher Ashley Sharp (9-11) was dominate through the first six innings, limiting Valparaiso to just two singles and a walk, but did not record an out in the seventh as the Crusaders plated a run on three hits and a walk.
Montana Wear relieved Sharp and struck out the first batter she faces, but Valpo cut the margin to 4-3 as back-to-back walk forced in two runs. Wear, however, regrouped from there and earned her second save of the season as she retired the final two batters of the game on a soft line drive back to her and a pop out to third.
Pfeffer and Gorman each had two hits to pace the Raider offense.
Wright State (21-32) faces Green Bay in an elimination contest Friday morning at 10:30. The game was originally set for noon, but was moved up due to a forecast of rain later in the day.
Should the Raiders prevail in that one, WSU would take on the loser of the 1:00 winner's bracket final between Oakland and UIC at 3:30.
