The Wright State softball team held an early 2-0 lead, only to see Oakland score seven of the game's last eight runs to claim the Horizon League Tournament title with a 7-3 decision Saturday afternoon in Rochester, Michigan.
WSU scored a run in the first as Jess Gorman singled to center and Hanna Floyd followed with a triple to right center. The Raiders then made it 2-0 in the third as Alexis Mayle singled down the left field line, with pinch-runner Ashton Salyers advancing to second on a Honnah Susor grounder and scoring on Gorman's hit to left.
Oakland, though, tied the game with two in its half of the third and went up 4-2 with single runs in the fourth and fifth.
Wright State put together a rally in the sixth as Gorman doubled to center, went to third on a Floyd bunt and scored on Becka Peterson's hit to right. Pinch-runner Macey Gunther moved up to second on a Reagan Stofcheck bunt and looked to be in position to score as Libby Pfeffer drove a fly ball along the left field line, but Oakland left fielder Courtnee Johnson came up with a diving catch to keep the Golden Grizzlies up one.
That lead expanded to 7-3 in the bottom of the sixth on a three-run home run to center by tournament MVP Sara Cupp.
Three Raiders were selected to the All-Tournament Team in Gorman, Ashley Sharp and Susor. Gorman, who had three hits and two runs scored in the championship game, hit .450 (9 for 20) with five RBI, four doubles, four runs scored in six tournament games. The nine hits and four doubles were the most in the tournament.
Sharp went 4-1 with a 1.66 earned run average over 38 innings while Susor hit .300 (6 for 20) and led the tournament with five runs scored.
Wright State finished the season with a final record of 23-33.
