Down 1-0 at the half, the Wright State men's soccer team tallied three goals in the second half, two in the final nine minutes, to defeat West Virginia 3-1 Tuesday night at Alumni Field.
The Mountaineers (2-4) took a 1-0 lead into the halftime break after scoring at the 20:38 mark of the first half. Ryan Cain recorded his fifth goal of the year on assists by Jamie Merriam and Joey Piatczyc.
The Raiders, though, tied the game at the 57:36 mark of the second half. After WVU was called for a foul just outside of the box, junior midfielder Sam DeRoy connected on a free kick for his first goal of the season.
Junior forward Eric Lynch then gave WSU the lead for good at the 81:32 mark as his free kick from the right side went off a Mountaineer defender and into the goal for his third goal of the season.
At the 89:43 mark, senior forward Brett Elder sealed the win with his first goal of the season, with freshman midfielder Jackson Dietrich providing the assist.
"Give West Virginia credit, they're a fantastic team," said WSU head coach Bryan Davis. "They're the most athletic team we've faced in quite a while. They gave us quite a test."
"In the second half, we raised our level and I couldn't be more proud of our effort," added Davis. "We're coming together as a team and this was definitely a great team win."
Junior goalkeeper Tyler Blackmer posted one save as Wright State led 12-9 in shots. West Virginia led 4-1 in corner kicks.
Wright State (5-1), now winners of three straight, opens Horizon League play on Saturday as the Raiders travel to Cleveland State for a 7:00 match.
