The Wright State women's soccer team (9-7, 4-3) won 1-0 over Cleveland State (8-8, 4-3) on Senior Night at Alumni Field Wednesday.
First Half Highlights
Five minutes into the match, the Raiders found the back of the net on a counter attack off a Cleveland State free kick from midfield. Great ball movement up the right hand side pushed the action towards the Viking defense so the Raiders shifted the ball back towards the middle and across to the left side finding defensive midfielder Kat Schmidt pushing forward. She settled the ball and quickly hit it towards junior Mattie Cutts at the top of the box. Mattie controlled it to her right foot and hit a looping shot over the Viking goalkeepers head to the back corner of the net for her third goal of the season. The assist was Schmidt's first on the season. The Raiders were outshot 6-5 in the first half but controlled the ball for a fair amount of the half.
Second Half Highlights
The second half saw plenty of action both ways with the Vikings finding many opportunities near the Raiders goal only to find the ball sail wide and over the goal. With 57 seconds left in the game and the score still 1-0, the Raiders were whistled for a foul inside of their own penalty box, giving Cleveland State a prime opportunity to tie the match. Vikings freshman forward Jenna Prathapa stepped up to take the penalty shot and hit the ball to the right side of the goal. Raider sophomore goalkeeper Maddie Jewell guessed correctly and made a diving save, pushing the ball out of bounds. This save, her sixth on the evening, secured her fifth shutout of the season and gave the Raiders a victory on Senior Night. This win moves them in to a fourth place tie with the Vikings in the Horizon League standings.
Coach Speak
Head Coach Pat Ferguson had this to say, "It was a game that we did just enough to win, scored an early goal and our goalkeeper had a career night making several key stops including a penalty kick at the very end. Cleveland State is a good team, well-coached and we were fortunate to come out with the victory."
