The Wright State men's soccer team will begin its march for the 2017 Horizon League Championship Monday as they host Cleveland State at 7 pm in a quarterfinal game. The winner will advance to play UIC or Green Bay Thursday in Chicago. The championship game will be played in Chicago Saturday night. The game will be shown on ESPN3. All league selections will be announced Monday afternoon.
Wright State
The Raiders (10-6-1, 6-3) are coming off a 2-0 win over IUPUI Saturday night and will carry the four seed into tournament action.
Alec Philippe and
Jalim Bayo notched the goals for the Raiders 10
th win of the season. It marked the fourth straight year of double digit wins. The first four-year run of its kind since 1992.
Wright State, 6-1-1 at home this year, has been led by
Stefan Rokvic's eight goals and one assist.
AJ Paterson had seven goals. Goalie
Joel Sundell has been solid in the nets with six shutouts. Overall, eight of the 10 wins have been shutouts.
The Raiders have advanced to the finals of the Horizon League Championship four times in the first eight seasons under head coach
Bryan Davis. WSU won the regular-season title in 2016.
Cleveland State
The Vikings (6-9-2, 4-3-2) will be the number five seed of the tournament. CSU ended the regular season with a 2-1 loss to Detroit Mercy at home and finished the year with a 1-5-1 record in the final seven games. Vlad Jandric and Noah Pio each have four goals each to pace Cleveland State. Pio has added five assists. Sebastian Kalk has played the bulk of the time in the nets, posting five wins.
The Series
Cleveland State leads the overall series 18-15-1 and defeated the Raiders 2-1 on Oct. 28. The Raiders won last year's regular-season matchup at home 2-0.
