Raiders defeat Cleveland State for 16th straight win

The Wright State volleyball team defeated Horizon League foe Cleveland State 3-1 on Wednesday night in the Raiders first midweek matchup of the season, extending the team's nation-leading winning streak to 16 straight games. The 16 consecutive victories ties the Wright State program record set by the 1985 squad.

Wednesday night the Raiders improved to 5-0 in conference play with the win, taking the first set 25-12 before falling in set wo 29-27 and responding with set wins of 25-23 and 25-20 to close out the victory. The Raiders now hit the road for five consecutive Horizon League matchups, beginning Friday night at UIC.
 
The Raiders had four players finish with double-digit kills as Teddie Sauer and Megan Alders each finished with a match-high at 13 kills. Celia Powers racked up 11 kills and Nyssa Baker followed with 10 kills of her own. Wright State finshed with 58 kills as a team along with 104 digs and 10 blocks. Lainey Stephenson led the Raiders with 26 digs and passed out a match-high 46 assists. Jenna Story followed with 22 digs, Celia Powers picked up 19 digs and Hannah Colvin contributed 15.


 
 
Set 1
The Vikings scored the first point but Baker answered with a kill to tie the score as the Raiders had a lead over Cleveland State early in the match. Powers served an ace to give the Wright State 10 points and a six-point lead. The Vikings went on a three-point run but were unable to shorten their deficit. The Raiders led by seven as Powers served her second ace to push the Raiders to 20 points. Three kills in a row from the Raiders finished the set for a 25-12 win.
 
Set 2
The Raiders started the set down 3-0, until they went on a three-point run to tie the game. The points went back and forth as each team went kill-for-kill. The Raiders took a five-point lead to make the score 11-6. Gibson knocked down a kill to give the Raiders point 20. Wright State held a strong lead until Cleveland State closed the deficit and tied the game at 24-24. Each team had a chance at set point before the Vikings ended the set with a block to win 29-27.
 
Set 3
The points went back and forth to start until the Raiders went on a seven-point run to take the advantage at 13-6. The Vikings answered with a five-point run of their own to tie the game at 14-14. The teams went kill-for-kill into the red zone, but the Raiders reached point 20 with a two-point lead. Sauer knocked down a kill to push Wright State to set point. The Vikings fought back on a three-point run, but the Raiders came out on top winning the set 25-23.
 
Set 4
The Vikings won the first point to open the set, but Alders answered with two kills back to back to give the Raiders the lead at 6-4. Cleveland State fought back and tied the score at 13-13 but were not able to take a lead. The Raiders had a two-point advantage as they headed into the red zone. The Vikings went on a three-point run to make it to 20 points but Alders answered with a kill to give Wright State match point. The Raiders won the match 25-20 with a huge triple block from Grace Hauck, Powers and Alders.
