Wright State (18-26, 5-10) took the series at second-place Youngstown State on Wednesday in a closely contested matchup by a score of 4-2. After the Penguins struck for two runs in the first, Lexie Hilling and Makenna Durieux combined for six straight shutout innings and the Raiders scored four to win the series after splitting the doubleheader on Tuesday.
Â
2nd Inning
After Youngstown State put two runs on the board in the first, the Raiders responded in the top of the second with a pair of runs to tie the game in the early stages. After Raidyn Johnson drew a walk, Lauren Deitrick slugged a home run over the centerfield wall. Lexie Hilling took over in the circle en route to 3.2 innings without allowing a run and giving up just three hits.
Â
3rd Inning
Rebekah Lenos began the frame with a single and stole second to advance into scoring position for Madison Hartman. Hartman battled and won a 10-pitch at bat and fouled off seven pitches before connecting on an RBI single to left.
Â
4th Inning
The Raiders added another run in the top of the fourth which ended up being their last run scored in the game. Madison Nunez singled and came around to score on a big error from Youngstown State.
Â
Makenna Durieux tossed the final 2.1 innings for the Raiders and claimed her first save of the season while Hilling improved her record to 5-1. As a team, Wright State played extremely well, not only in Wednesday's game but in the series overall. In the series finale, the Raider didn't commit an error.
Â
Head Coach Laura Matthews was particularly pleased with her team's performance, stating, "We played some of our best softball this series. We had moments where our offense carried us and we had times where our pitching and defense carried us like the third game. We've got a big couple weeks in front of us, but I like how we are playing.
Â
Wright State returns home this weekend for a series against Oakland as the team continues to seek a berth in the Horizon League tournament in three weeks.
