
Raiders battle for five-set win to open Wright State Invitational

The Wright State volleyball team extended its winning streak to six games on Friday night with a thrilling 3-2 win over Indiana State to open the Wright State Invitational.
The Raiders had three players finish with double-digit kills, led by Taylor Gibson and Celia Powers each recording a game-high 14 kills. Nyssa Baker finished with 11 kills of her own, while Jenna Story finished the match with 33 digs on the defensive end and setter Lainey Stephenson tallied 15 digs.
After dropping the opening set 22-25, the Raiders bounced back to win the second set 25-23 and the third set 25-16 before seeing Indiana State extend the match with a 26-24 fourth set win. Wright State capped the night with a 20-18 fifth set win to finish off the back-and-forth match
The Raiders step back on their home court with a pair of matches Saturday, beginning at 12:30 p.m. against Western Illinois. Wright State closes out the weekend with a 7:00 p.m. matchup against Toledo. The Wright State Invitational will also feature two additional matches on Saturday, with Indiana State taking on Toledo to open the day at 10 a.m. and the Sycamores facing Western Illinois at 4:30 p.m.

HOW IT HAPPENEDÂ
Set 1
The Raiders jumped out to an early 4-2 advantage. As the set went on, Indiana State went point-for-point with Wright State, taking the lead at 13-12 and continuing to hold the lead until the Raiders tied the game at 20-20. A kill from Gibson gave the Raiders a 21-20 lead, but the Sycamores came back with an ace and a kill to win the set 25-22.

Set 2
Indiana State started the set with a 3-0 lead before the Raiders went on three-point run to take the lead at 4-3. The Sycamores fought to take back the lead as the score reached 8-5. Hannah Colvin made two great digs to keep the ball alive for Stephenson to get a kill. With the score tied at 10-10 after three straight kills by the Raiders, Wright State continued the momentum and took the lead at 18-16, eventually closing out the set with a 25-23 win.

The Raiders offense took off early in the set, as they led at 4-2 after Story had an ace. Gibson racked up back-to-back kills to add to the advantage at 13-5. Colvin served two aces during the set to contribute to Wright State's lead as the Raiders played clean on offense and defense to take their advantage to the red zone. Gibson knocked down a kill for set point as the Raiders won the set 25-16.

The Raiders led the Sycamores at 9-5 before Indiana State rallied to tie the game at 13-13. The points went back-and-forth before Indiana State went on a five-point run to take the lead at 23-21. After service errors from both teams tied the score at 24, the Sycamores tallied a kill to win the set 26-24.

The Raiders were smart offensively, using tips and rolls to build their lead to 7-4 before Indiana State fought back to take the lead at 10-8. Each team had multiple chances to end the match as the score went back and forth on match point before Sauer powered down an ace for the Raiders to win 20-18.
