Looking Back: Men's Tennis

The Wright State men's tennis team, along with programs from around the country, saw its 2020 season cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The COVID-19 pandemic has shaken the sports world and collegiate tennis was no exception. NCAA President Mark Emmert and the Board of Governors announced the cancelations of all remaining winter and spring NCAA championships on March 12 and the Horizon League followed on March 16 with the announcement of the cancelation all remaining competition through the remainder of the academic year, officially closing the books on the Raiders' season with an abrupt ending.

Wright State recorded an overall recorded of 3-8 under first-year head coach Ben Roeser, with victories against Austin Peay, Chicago State and a 7-0 win over Thomas More this season.

"We never want to see a season end this way with three seniors, but we came a long way and the adversity will make us stronger as a team," Roeser said. "I'm very proud of every student-athlete on the team. We saw huge improvements individually and as a team, both in the classroom and on the court. We will have more great things to come."

Senior Param Pun recorded an overall record of 5-6 in singles action during the 2020 campaign while also compiling a 5-5 doubles record with partner Theo Bourghelle. Bourgehelle tallied a 3-8 record during singles action.

Senior Javier Alvarez De La Villa and sophomore Leighton Brandon recorded a 3-7 doubles mark as a pair, with De La Villa tallying singles victories against Austin Peay and Thomas More while Brandon finished with a 4-7 singles record.

The Raiders final senior, Carlos Estrada Sanchez, would tally a 4-4 doubles record with his partner, junior William Morton, which included a victory over Ohio State. In singles action, Sanchez tallied wins against Thomas More and on the road against Chicago State. Morton finished the season with a singles record of 3-7, which included wins against Dayton, Thomas More and Chicago State.

In late February the Raiders swept the Horizon League's weekly awards, with Pun named the Men's Singles Player of the Week while Pun and Bourghelle earned Men's Doubles Team of the Week honors.
