Women's Soccer comeback falls short at Detroit Mercy

DETROIT — Second-half goals by Lauren Borchert and Marcella Sizer were not enough on Thursday night, as the Wright State women's soccer program fell to Detroit Mercy 3-2 at Titan Field.

The loss snapped a five-game unbeaten streak in conference play for the Raiders (6-5-2, 3-1-2), while UDM improved to 6-6-1 overall and 4-2 in the HL.

Wright State was in control for the majority of the game, holding the edge in total shots (18-8), shots on goal (8-6), and corner kicks (8-1). However, UDM made the best out of its minimal opportunities with a season-high three goals, the most allowed by the Raiders in HL play this season.

Sizer paced the WSU attack with a season-high five shots, including her team-leading sixth goal of the year. Borchert contributed with four shots and her fourth goal of the 2022 campaign, while Olga Massombo and Olivia Mace added an assist apiece. Goalkeeper Jessika Seward finished with three saves over 90 minutes.

Detroit Mercy jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the opening half of the Horizon League contest. Hailey Wentzloff netted a penalty kick goal in the 16th minute, followed by Eric Toupin connecting on an unassisted goal in the 24th minute.

While the Raiders were scoreless in the first half, three individuals in Josie Krupp, Kaylin Helinski, and Borchert came close to scoring with a shot on goal apiece. Helinski added a header off the crossbar in the 14th minute.

WSU continued to pressure the Titan defense out of the break, leading to a goal by Borchert in the 60th minute. UDM answered back at the 72-minute mark with a score by Olivia Zulewski, bringing the Raider deficit back to two goals, 3-1.

The action-packed second half continued, as Sizer scored her fourth goal in the last three games off a corner kick by Mace in the 77th minute. Trailing 3-2, the Raiders rattled off four shots in the final 13 minutes, including a shot on frame by Massombo with a minute remaining.

UDM goalkeeper Jazmine Scott denied the late rally, keeping the Raiders scoreless and sealing the loss.

Wright State will return to play on Sunday, October 9, against Purdue Fort Wayne for its second-to-last home game of the regular season. The conference meeting will start at 1 p.m. and stream on ESPN+.
