2022-23 Horizon League Men's Basketball Conference Schedule Unveiled

DAYTON/INDIANAPOLIS – The Horizon League announced its 2022-23 men's basketball conference schedule Tuesday afternoon, as head coach Scott Nagy and the Raiders look to defend their HL tournament title from last March.

For the second straight season, the Horizon League schedule begins with a single weekend of action to open December before the close of non-conference slates around the League. The final 18 contests of the regular season will begin just ahead of the new year and run through the final weekend of the regular season in late February.

"We feel the Horizon League has improved overall," Nagy said. "There are many key players returning for another year with plenty of new talent entering the league. We look forward to the challenge we have ahead of us in the Horizon League."

Wright State will begin its 2022-23 Horizon League journey at home inside the Nutter Center on Thursday, December 1 against Robert Morris, before a meeting with Youngstown State on Sunday, December 4. The Raiders close out the 2022 calendar with a short trip south to take on Northern Kentucky on December 29 before ringing in 2023 with a quick trip over to Indianapolis and IUPUI on January 2.

The Raiders' first home contests of 2023 will come on January 6 and 8 against Detroit Mercy and Oakland before they embark on their longest League trip of the year and visits to Green Bay and Milwaukee on January 12 and 14. Wright State will host four-straight home contests inside the Nutter Center to close January, welcoming Purdue Fort Wayne (Jan. 19), Cleveland State (Jan. 21), Milwaukee (Jan. 26) and Green Bay (Jan. 28) to town over that stretch as the second half of Horizon League play begins.

A weekend trip to the eastern-most League foes kicks off February, as Wright State travels to Youngstown State (Feb. 2) and Robert Morris (Feb. 4) before returning to the Nutter Center for matchups with IUPUI (Feb. 8) and Northern Kentucky (Feb. 10) to close the regular season home schedule. The Raiders end the regular season slate with back-to-back road weekends, first against Cleveland State (Feb. 17) and Purdue Fort Wayne (Feb. 19) before heading to Michigan to take on Oakland (Feb. 23) and Detroit Mercy (Feb. 25) the final weekend of the regular season.

The opening rounds of the Horizon League Basketball Championships will once again start on campus with early round matchups set for February 28 and March 2. The semifinals and Horizon League championship game are set for March 6 and 7.

Robert Morris (Dec. 1, Nutter Center | Feb. 4, Moon Township, PA) Robert Morris is coming off an 8-24 overall record last year, with a 5-16 conference mark. The Raiders won both regular season matchups last year and have won all four matchups since RMU's move to the Horizon League. Wright State is 6-0 all-time in the short history between the teams, with the only other matchups way back in 1977 and 1978.

Youngstown State (Dec. 4, Nutter Center | Feb. 2, Youngstown, OH) Youngstown State turned in a 19-15 overall mark with a 12-9 HL record last season, falling in the first round of the Horizon League Championship before playing in and advancing to the quarterfinals of The Basketball Classic postseason tournament. Wright State split the two matchups last season, falling by three points on the road when they had just seven total players available, and winning by double figures inside the Nutter Center. Wright State leads the overall series 50-15 entering the 2022-23 campaign, including wins in eight of the last 11 meetings.

Northern Kentucky (Dec. 29, Highland Heights, KY | Feb. 10, Nutter Center) Northern Kentucky was 20-12 last season with a 14-6 Horizon League record. The Raiders dropped both regular season meetings but won the Horizon League Championship over the Norse in Indianapolis in the third meeting of the year. Wright State leads the overall series 28-15 and has won six of the last eight meetings entering 2022-23.

IUPUI (Jan. 2, Indianapolis, IN | Feb. 8, Nutter Center) IUPUI finished with an 3-26 overall record in 2021-22, while the Jaguars were 1-16 in Horizon League play. Wright State won both regular season matchups, with 14- and 28-point victories, last January. The Raiders hold a 19-3 overall series advantage entering 2022-23, having won the last 10 meetings and 13 of the last 14 matchups overall.

Detroit Mercy (Jan. 6, Nutter Center | Feb. 25, Detroit, MI) Detroit Mercy finished 2021-22 with a 14-16 record and a 10-7 mark in conference play, falling in the quarterfinals of the Horizon League Championship before playing in the opening round of The Basketball Classic postseason tournament. Wright State and Detroit Mercy split the two meetings last season with each winning on its home floor. The Raiders lead the all-time series 37-28 overall and have won 14 of the last 16 overall over the last eight seasons.

Oakland (Jan. 8, Nutter Center | Feb. 23, Rochester, MI) Oakland finished 20-12 overall in 2021-22, compiling a 12-7 mark in Horizon League play. Wright State won all three meetings last season, including ending Oakland's season with a victory in the HL quarterfinals following two regular season wins in February. The Raiders lead the overall series 19-8 against the Grizzlies.

Green Bay (Jan. 12, Green Bay, WI | Jan. 28, Nutter Center) Green Bay finished the 2021-22 season with a 5-25 overall record, including a 4-16 mark in Horizon League play. The Raiders won both regular season matchups last January, with a three-point home victory before a 17-point win in Wisconsin. A tight series throughout history, Wright State now has a slim, 36-33 overall series lead entering this season, as the Raiders have won 11 of the last 12 meetings.

Milwaukee (Jan. 14, Milwaukee, WI | Jan. 26, Nutter Center) Milwaukee finished 10-22 overall and 8-14 in the Horizon League last season, with the Raiders and Panthers splitting the two meetings last season, with each winning on its own home floor. The Raiders hold a slight 36-32 lead over Milwaukee in the overall series, including winning seven of the last nine meetings.

Purdue Fort Wayne (Jan. 19, Nutter Center | Feb. 19, Fort Wayne, IN) Fort Wayne is coming off a 21-12 record with a 15-6 Horizon League mark last season, falling in the Horizon League Championship semifinals before playing in the opening round of the College Basketball Invitational postseason tournament. Wright State won both regular season matchups, with 12- and 13-point victories, and now leads the short series 11-3, with nine of the 13 matchups coming back during the 1980's.

Cleveland State (Jan. 21, Nutter Center | Feb. 17, Cleveland, OH) Cleveland State finished the 2021-22 season with a 20-11 overall record and a 15-6 mark in Horizon League play, falling in the Horizon League Championship semifinals before playing in the opening round of the NIT postseason tournament. The Raiders dropped both regular season meetings but defeated the Vikings in the Horizon League Championship semifinals in Indianapolis in the third meeting of the year. Wright State has won 12 of the last 17 contests in the series overall, which is the longest series all-time in Raider history. The Raiders hold a slim, 43-37 advantage in the all-time series entering 2022-23.
